  1. I propose that sewage systems, indoor plumbing, and fine porcelain thrones are man's greatest accomplishments.

    All hail Joseph Bazalgette!

My extended family that lived in the country, relied on a very archaic septic tank system. Anytime I stayed there it brought me waves of newfound appreciation for modern plumbing marvels.

I can't fathom 15 year olds headed off to war. I stand in awe of your Dad, jams.

  2. Seriously I rate Bazalgette along with John Snow as two of London's greatest figures. The sewage system did a nell of a lot to improve public health in teh capital. John Snow was a doctor who demonstrated that cholera was water borne. Both saved a lot of lives.

Septic tanks? Hmm I am a pampered suburbanite.. give me a system that flushes my doings as far waway and as quickly as possible!

I could not imagine myself doing what my father did. He was flying on bombing raids when he was 16. I was glad to have exams as my worst concern at 16!
