The theme for the week's
Photo Hunt is vertical. What you see in these photos is not a defunct lamp post. It is a defunct sewer vent at the top of my street. It used to vent gas build ups in the sewer (and probably stunk) when the street was built in the early 1880s. Luckily it is disconnected from the sewer so the worst smell around folows a plate of beans or other such carminatives!
I'm out on Friday.I'll be visiting tomorrow
That is a fascinating structure. What a good job it is sealed off now!
ReplyDeleteIt is a defunct sewer vent at the top of my street.
ReplyDeleteAh, this has been puzzling me for years.
I didn't realize these things existed. Thanks, interesting structure, er vertical structure.
ReplyDeleteI wonder they don't take it down in the paranoid safety conscious world we live in.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend to you Jams.
aww..haha why did they do that? Good thing it's not emitting anything :D
ReplyDeleteA thing of great function and beauty.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you would no longer have that extra flavors in your meal. LOL! :P

Interesting! Both the explanation and also the sight of that old, disused structure amidst newer ones in the second photo!
ReplyDeleteInteresting vertical for this week.
ReplyDeleteAmazing! And like all good functional (even sewer-y things) things from the late Victorian era... Highly decorative!
ReplyDeletewhat an interesting tidbit about life in your part of the world! an artsy structure for such a stinky, but important, job =]
ReplyDeletei haven't seen a sewer vent done this way. well, it comes out as artistic. :)
ReplyDeletehad no idea these things existed, how interesting!
ReplyDeleteNever heard of a sewer vent before and I have to agree with Ian. The vent could be mistaken for an artsy post. Good thing it's already sealed.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend, Jams :D
Never heard of such things. Perfectly vertical, though.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
vertical
Wow! That is very unusual. Good thing it's disconnected now ...

Who would have ever guessed that??? We learn so much on the internet don't we? I like your “angle” on the vertical theme.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a new one on me. Great shot and perfect for the theme. Happy weekend.
ReplyDeleteYou made a tacky, icky thing look beautiful . . . and it fits the theme perfectly.
ReplyDeletealoha,
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing your interpretation of the verticle them today, i like the photos of this reused piece into public sculpture..wonderful
How interesting - I would never have guessed what it was. It definitely fits the vertical theme.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely vertical. And an interesting piece of architecture. I think this would officially qualify as a "Thomasson"

I really like the second pic. Nice tones and lovely wierdness.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDelete"... the worst smell around folows a plate of beans or other such carminatives!"
ReplyDeleteJust remember, nowhere in the Conan Doyle Canon does Holmes actually say "alimentary, my dear Watson!"
We don't have anything like that here in Toronto. Good thing it is no longer in use. Ew! Happy photo hunting!
ReplyDeleteThat's very strange, but indeed vertical.
ReplyDeleteI'm late so I'll say "Happy Sunday".
