Wordless Wednesday - Lady Henry Somerset's Memorial
Memorial to Lady Henry Somerset, Victoria Embankment, London - a Victorian philantrophist and temperance campaigner.
Very interesting statue, jams. I'd be more interested to see a monument to the fabled 'Somerset Mom,' though! My mom called herself that the whole time I grew up. I still don't totally get it. I guess it beat the 'Queen B.' title that I informally bestowed on her. Under my breath, of course.
Thanks all for your comments. Pete, remember the gazunder holds more Liqour than a glass!
We never had a prohibitio here Beakerking. The most that was achieved was that councils could control the issue of licence. A few areas were dry others were able, until very recently to have pubs shut on sundays and that's about it..
I liked all the pictures on your other blog. Great title for a blog.;)

ReplyDeleteHmmm, I don't know this Lady. I'll have to google her.
Why is it that they don't use her name or did she really get named Henry ???
ReplyDeleteLetha, I think it goes back to the old, redundant habit of calling a wife Mrs, husband's name... eg Mrs David Beckham.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see that has fallen by the wayside
You can find this statue at the Temple Station end of Eastern Victoria Embankment Gardens,
