The title of this blog comes from a Gaelic expression -"putting on the poor mouth"-which means to exaggerate the direness of one's situation in order to gain time or favour from creditors.

Iris Dement
Wrote Wasteland of the Free one of the angriest songs I've ever heard. This version is her and piano. It is still a powerful song (btw it was written in 1996, so it is not a protest against Dubya).
On a much lighter note here's another outing for In Spite of Ourselves, a wonderful duet with John Prine
Dement sounds great with John Prine. After years of smoking (various substances, I'm sure) and drinking, Prine needs a strong female voice to pick him up when he starts to fall. Dement works very nicely. I hope they sing together more.
Lighter is not always better.
ReplyDeleteTrue. Wasteland of the Free is a powerful song. In spite of ourselves is fun

ReplyDeleteIt would definitely be nice to hear more collaborations between the two.
ReplyDeleteJohn Prine never starts to fall. He's a little rougher around the corners since he had throat cancer, but he never starts to fall.
