Photo Hunt - Old fashioned

The subject for this week's entry for Photo Hunt is old fashioned. Last summer I took a trip to Tilbury Fort, a 17th century fort on the Thames about 22 miles east of London. While there I spent some time watching boats go by, including this Thames sail barge. Barges used to be a very common sight on the river in the days when London was one of the world's major ports. Times change: containerisation and the closure of the London docks meant that these boats were no longer needed. A few have been preserved and are now used as pleasure boats. I quite fancy taking a trip on one in the Summer.

  8. Oh, the noble river that is the Thames. Very nostalgic. Regattas on this part or barges?

I love the photo! Somehow the barge reminds me of clipper ships [more imagination of course]. :)

    have a great weekend!

What a wonderful choice, and how fortunate to have been there to see it. I say that from Canada with little chance of seeing one. Having read some history of London, it is a great thing to see a photo of the sail barge. Oh, I like the name of your blog.

  35. Always interesting. This type of transportation option has been transferred to other countries. I am sure it is more practical and cost effective. Just not so romantic. All the best.
