The title of this blog comes from a Gaelic expression -"putting on the poor mouth"-which means to exaggerate the direness of one's situation in order to gain time or favour from creditors.

WW - figure
Another image from Pere Lachaise. This week's entry for the Tuesday and Wednesday editions of Wordless Wednesday
I love statuary. It is always interesting to see what the artist decides to portray, and this is very powerful. I think the use of B&W heightens the sense of drama.
So many interesting interpretations. It certainly isn't cheerful, but very interesting. Very gray. Full of symbolism, religious and otherwise. And I do see the Jedi thing as well ;)
eerie.... not a cheerful picture for me.
ReplyDeleteAnd the gloom and doom of recession isn't helping everybody.....
That's actually kinda creepy. But in a strangely beautiful way.
ReplyDeleteImpressive!
ReplyDeleteIs there a story behind this statue, Jams?
Ach, I felt like that this morning.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone. It is a statue on a tomb at Pere Lachaise in Paris Sean. Just as well I didn't see you James!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shot! I am a big fan of cemetery art, however thanks to Dr Who whenever I see statues such as these I think to myself "don't blink" :)
ReplyDeleteWow, looks like a vintage photo.
ReplyDeleteVery appropriate for a tomb, captures the gloom perfectly.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes
With his hands out and thumbs facing down it looks like he's holding back a torrent from the other side of the wall.
ReplyDeleteA bit nightmarish...It looks to me like he just got out of the tomb. Probably was buried alive like Balzac's Colonel Chabert.
ReplyDeleteThat's very interesting. I can't decide if it's greeting with open arms or protecting what's behind it and holding back.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you took a black and white version of the picture... gives it a much deeper meaning....
ReplyDeletenice one!
The image is spooky & bizarre and it sends chills down my spine. Happy WW!
ReplyDeleteVery forbidding and haunting. I like the vibe.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot. It looks very spooky..Happy WW:)
ReplyDeleteI'll like to think it's opening arms to welcome. But a matter of harsh environment elements caused it's current state.
ReplyDeleteHappy WW Jams! :)
Errr.....Spooky look....
ReplyDeleteCreepy guy!
ReplyDeleteTrying to scare me, eh!
:)
That rocks man!
ReplyDeleteIt is dark.
ReplyDeleteThis is great. I love it. so very dramatic.
ReplyDeletehappy WW!
I know it's supposed to be WW but what's the story behind this? I'm curious. It's very interesting and creepy too.
ReplyDeleteVery Striking - He knows how to elicit emotion. Makes you want to know more…
ReplyDeleteHappy WW
some haunting ? I wonder how this looks like at night.
ReplyDeletestrange and creepy. it looks as if the hands were chained.
ReplyDeleteThere must be an interesting story behind the image. What could it be?
ReplyDeleteIt's spooky but it's a good find. :D
ReplyDeletestrange photo, gives me the creeps.
ReplyDeletehappy ww.
That is haunting yet inviting. I want to see her face!
ReplyDeletethat's spooky! i hope never to see a figure like this on my way home on a dark night :)...
ReplyDeleteWow! Very creepy. I don't think I'd want to be there at night.
ReplyDeleteGoodness, that dark face is awfully reaper-like.
ReplyDelete*shudder*
Probably not the look the sculptor was going for.
Now that I know it's a tomb, it makes sense why it's so gloomy!
ReplyDeleteGlad it's sunny outside right now...
ReplyDelete:)
That is seriously creepy... that makes me think of Lepers in Biblical times. Looks like the face is missing bits. Happy WW! :)
ReplyDeleteSo stark, and thought provoking.
ReplyDeleteHave you also the one on Jim Morrison's grave ?

Ooo...I love it. Looks rather Jedi-like, too.
ReplyDeleteSo many interesting interpretations. It certainly isn't cheerful, but very interesting. Very gray. Full of symbolism, religious and otherwise. And I do see the Jedi thing as well ;)

ReplyDeletePowerful shot.
ReplyDeleteThat is very life like!!!
