The title of this blog comes from a Gaelic expression -"putting on the poor mouth"-which means to exaggerate the direness of one's situation in order to gain time or favour from creditors.

Jesus on a steam iron
Scroll down for WW
It's definitely been a bumper year for simulacra and it is not over yet! Here is news of as Jesus sighting on an iron in Massachusetts
The brownish residue on the bottom of the iron looks like the face of a man with long hair.
The owner was raised Catholic. She and her two college-age daughters agree that the image looks like Jesus and is proof that "he's listening." She plans to keep the iron in a closet and buy a new one.
Personally it looks a bit more like a Klingon than Jesus to me.... Hi ho
I was reading today about legends of impressions left in rock by Guru Nanak's hand, body, and feet. Even though I've actually seen and touched the hand print, it's still pretty amazing to hear the other stories and somehow a lot more difficult to accept becasue they are not as well known perhaps. My husband mentioned it might be a similar phenomena to the virgins tears and now that you mention it Jesus on the back of an iron. I suppose in some cases people see what they want to see, and it can feel like a message of love and support. The rest of us though might never see the image if it weren't for the person with the "filter" pointing it out. We'd be getting out the brillo pad or chucking it in the waste bin. But the devout person always has that consciousness within them so they are likely to see it manifest without as well. Anyhow that's my two sense.
ReplyDeleteThere is a tendency for the human mind to make sense of patters which is why people see faces where they see them.
ReplyDeleteThere is a tendency to consider every perceived image of a man with long hair as Jesus. The silliest was the image of Jesus on a terrier's backside!
We do tend to find patterns, especially faces.
ReplyDeleteI do see the klingon, though his ridge is a bit weak :)
that looked more like George Washington.
ReplyDeleteIt really looks like some facial pattern, nice entry for WW!
ReplyDeletehappy WW!
He can be found in the most amazing places.
ReplyDeleteHas Officer Pluck recently not been to the barber?
ReplyDeleteThat's pareidolia for you catsynth. Not much in the lines of ridges but still a good Klingon!
ReplyDeleteLooking like that Steve, no wonder the Americans beat Britain!

ReplyDeleteIf that was my iron I would be ashamed to show it in public ;-)
ReplyDeleteEven with a face of Jeebus/Klingon/George Washington on it?
ReplyDeleteI see a man with a pointy nose, facing left. I wonder what that means? ;-)
ReplyDeleteAh it must be pinocchio!
ReplyDeleteOh. I thought it was the Mona Lisa.
ReplyDeleteHaha the Giaconda iron!
ReplyDeleteThat wasn't very nice, ironing Jesus like that. I never realised Jesus was so tiny.
