The title of this blog comes from a Gaelic expression -"putting on the poor mouth"-which means to exaggerate the direness of one's situation in order to gain time or favour from creditors.
I agree Calum, the first is the better of the two, I got the effect by using filters. A red and a polarising filter together does darken the sky considerably even when taking a spot meter reading off the tower.
Thanks Sphinx. Actually it is quite a small church servicing what used to be little more than a hamlet at one time. Like Hornchurch and Romford (both were bigger) it got absorbed into greater London.
The first of the duo has much more atmosphere.

Mind you I'd be delighted with no.2.
