Sheela na Gig

A small Sheela na Gig that is on our garden wall.Based on one found in a Church in Kilpock in Herefordshire

  3. Oh, I love the mysterious Sheela na Gigs! This looks rather friendly compared to some others I've seen.
    It was P J Harvey's song that introduced me to them. Great song, that one.

  7. I was under the impression that the meaning/origin of them is debatable. To me they look like the dark side of the feminine, the obverse to the Virgin Mary.
    Kali is fearsome but she is mother/destroyer. Ok by me, you have to break an egg to make an omlette.

  8. They don't appear until about the 11th Century.They are certainly appear to be the reverse of the Madonna but the creation of the church
    than an something more ancient. They are still fascinating figures whatever the origin
