Photo Hunt - Monthly

The theme for the week's Photo Hunt is monthly. Here are a couple of concrete barges that have been left to rot at the side of the Thames for decades. The photo was taken at high tide. Tides having a monthly cycle I thought it would rooughly fit with the theme!

By the Thames

Two of the abandoned concrete barges on the Thames near the Tilda depot in Rainham. They may or may not have been built as part of the D-Day Mulberry Harbour, although one source is of the view that they served as petrol barges.

Whatever their role, these barges are slowly rotting away by the Thames

WW - Stone barges, Rainham

This week's entry for the Tuesday and Wednesday edition of Wordless Wednesday.

If you head down to the Thames at Rainham you will see a number of abandoned concrete near the Tilda rice premises. The barges played their part in history. They originally formed part of the mulberry harbours built to support the allied invasion of Normandy. In 1953 they were used to shore up river defences following the great floods of 1953. Now they are rotting away but provide excellent nesting sites for birds.
