The Independent reports that President Robert Mugabe has insisted that he would not stand down while his party was targeted by overseas sanctions.
The 87-year-old, who has ruled Zimbabwe since its independence from Britain in 1980, has again been selected as Zanu-PF's candidate for elections in 2013. He said retiring would be "an act of cowardice. It would be completely wrong when the West is still holding sanctions against us and pursuing regime change. I am lucky God has given me this longer life than others to be with you."
Mugabe's rle has been a disaster for Zimbabwe. The sooner he is consigned to te dusbtin of history, the better
