The title of this blog comes from a Gaelic expression -"putting on the poor mouth"-which means to exaggerate the direness of one's situation in order to gain time or favour from creditors.

Hadleigh Castle - Wordless Wednesday
This week's Wordless Wednesday is Hadleigh Castle in Essex. In that background you can see reclaimed marshland, the Thames and Kent.

what absolutely stunning photos!! I bet it's even more beautiful up close and personal.
Since my feet seem so firmly planted here in the US of A, I am thrilled that my photo-friends in the UK allow me to catch glimpses of these fabulous reminders (remainders?) of the past! My dream is to one day see them myself!
Jams, great photos (as always), and I love the B&W rendition.
I love the contrast in mood that color creates with these gorgeous photos. There doesn't seem the ghost of a chance people'd be around the first one. It's ethereal; color brings it back to earth!
Very nice pictures. I've ridden from Dover to London but I don't think we were far enough south to go by the Hadleigh Castle in Essex. Or did we? Happy WW! ..
Jim if you went from Dover to London you would not have seen Hadleigh castle. Dover castle is great though. I hope you got the chance to visit it. and the roman lighthouse
(pssst... hey I hate saying it, but those 'snap shots' you've got make my PC lag baaaaad...and my PC's a good one. No-one else mentioned this? If its just me, never mind!!)
Great shots (as usual), James. I also liked your post about the hedgehog - it's sad isn;t it. We've got a resident hedgehog in our garden and I love stumbling on him in the evening. I think cars are the hedgehog's biggest enemy, though. Happy WW!
I wish it could talk. It surprises me that it seems there are no barriers to people to prevent further destruction. On the other hand, it is nice that people are allowed free access. The land is so flat. I assume the marshland was there during the time of the castle. It's such an interesting post.

I can't decide which I like best: the clouds or the fields.
Of course, the castle is grand too...
I especially like the colour shot. Has it been post processed in some way? It has a heightened sky effect, to my eyes. Very cool.

I love castles but have yet to see one. This one looks like it's been bitten off! hehe....

That's fantastic. It must have been one beautiful castle before.
Both are wonderful, but the first one is my favorite. Although I like how the clouds lay in diagonal lines behind the tower in the second one.

I love castles, and these shots are stunning. . .I especially like the top one.
Hotep! Great photo! Castles are some massive structures...
Today is the Day of Presence for the people of New Orleans. The 2-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. I've dedicated my WW post to the recovery effort of that great American city. I hope you will take a moment to view my (not so) Wordless Wednesday post.
peace, Villager
Looks like postcards. Great quality.
Amazing photos! Happy WW!
Over here, we get all excited when we see something a hundred years old. I'd love to see the castles in the UK.
Great shots?

Thanks all. Miscmum youre right about Snap. I thought it would be a good idea. Instead it's a pain. I will remove it once I can find the code!
I wish I could see some castles, up close and personal.
Wow ! that must be beautiful !
Oh wow, that is impressive and beautiful! I can only imagine the exhileration of actually BEING there. :)
Jenn
Really beautiful!
Beautiful photos!!
Happy WW!!
This is wonderful. I like the color version, its shows the texture better and the clouds in the sky makes it even more appealing.
Again thanks for your kind comments
Remarkable how they build castles with a view in the middle age.
It's an amzing view.
I'm guessing you went there! Lucky you! :)
I love our old ruins around the country, this one reminds me a little of one back home, only I can't remember which one.
WOW! Stunning photo! TFS Mine's up too!
Makes me want to go there and explore.
As always, awesome photos. I especially like the B&W.
I love, love, love castles. Someday I hope to visit some. But for now I have your great pictures to hold me over.
Awesome pictures!
Wow! I want to go there and see it myself too. It's so striking! Andthose clear skies...perfect!
If only we could color our castles so easily and beautifully...
Love the pictures!
Great photos. I think I have commented before on my fondness for "ruins" and seeing these old buildings in various environments...
enjoyed your photos as always. I'm trying to decide if I prefer the b/w or the one in color
Those pictures are really cool! What a beautiful day!
Thanks everyone!
Great shots. Love the sky :-)
Oh wow! I'd love to see that one in person. I love castles, too. Thanks for sharing=:)
Great picture - wow - I'm number 86! You've got quite a WW following.
Wow, amazing shots! I love the second with the line of the clouds and the blocks of land in the background. beautiful!
