The electors of Voinestl in Romania have voted to re-elect a dead man as their mayor. Neculai Ivascu - who led Voinesti for almost two decades - died from a liver disease on Sunday, too late to cancel the contest. But the village's loyal residents still gave him 23 more votes than his rival, Gheorghe Dobrescu of the ruling National Liberal Party.

In a controversial decision, the electoral commission declared the runner-up and rival Mr Dobrescu the winner. Neculai Ivascu's party, the opposition Social Democrat Party, has said it will contest the decision.

The election of a corpse as mayor of Voinesti is not unprecedented of course. We only need to cast our mind back to the US elections in 2000 when the voters of Missouri had the option of electing John Ashcroft, the incumbent senator, or the late Mel Carnahan. Aschroft/dead man? Dead man/Ashcroft? The voters of Missouri chose not to elect the candidate with a pulse....

I hope politicians do not use this as a resume builder. Party hack c is about to die so lets campaign that a dead politician can do less harm than a live one.

I'd read about that on ... someone else's blog but I didn't know about the American one. What was that film where voters were given the option 'None of the above'? (An American comedy starring Richard Pryor maybe.)

Maybe we can get Ronald Reagen on this years ballot.

So does this mean we might be able to re-elect Reagan again? :0 Man, they must be seriously unhappy with their lot of canidates to choose a dead guy, but I completely understand their frustrations. 8-)

It broke ground for electing a president with no brain :P

To be honest a corpse can't actually do any harm. The only stench of corruption is the one of decomposition!

I've often asked myself:
How many countries do have what I consider a real democracy?
Is it enough to have 51% of "their" people in a parliament, then rule as they want, or also think about the 49% that did not give "them" their votes.

For me, democracy is first and last a matter of respect.

excellent post

ps. we are still in sorrow - but I do post from time to time

Respect is a crucial issue. At present there is scant respect for politicians, Tor!

Well, they say that's what Beethoven is doing in his grave: decomposing...

No real question there, if you believe in free and open, representative government. The corpse has to be preferable!

Haha Steve! Seriously I know US elections are slightly different. In the UK the election would be cancelled if one of the candidates dies.

Red Wine drinkers can now wipe that wine off their smile!

Wine Wipes are an innovative new product created especially for red wine drinkers who fall victim to stain left on their teeth and smile from drinking red wine.

Mary Ferguson was a 32 year old self professed lover of red wine. Unfortunately for Mary, red wine returned that love in the form of a nasty red wine film on her teeth and mouth. But she never let it bother her.. until the night she met Jack.

Sparks flew as Jack bellied up to the bar and ordered a big bodied bottle of red wine. This was love at first sight. Jack and Mary drank and danced the night away. And then, she did the unforgivable… She smiled. Her once pearly white teeth had morphed into a red stained filthy looking mouth. Jack tried to look away but couldn’t contain the disgust on his face. Mary quickly excused her self to the bathroom and maniacally attempted to scrub the wine off her mouth, but it was to no avail. Mary walked out of the bathroom with stained teeth and a newly chaffed tongue. By the time she returned, Jack had vanished, and left nothing for Mary but the bill… If she had only had a Wine Wipe.

Mary’s dilemma is common tale. Most red wine drinkers fall victim to this social fopah. Whether you call it ‘tannin teeth, malbec mouth, red badge of courage, or wine tattoo’, most red wine drinkers have experienced the unattractive dark film that red wine stain leaves on their smile. They have either excepted purple teeth as part of the experience or begrudgingly switched to Chardonnay… Until Now.

Wine Wipes are an innovative new product that will change the way people look at you while you when you drink red wine. Wine Wipes quickly and easily remove red wine stain with a gentle orange blossom flavor that won’t interfere with the wine tasting experience, making Wine Wipes the perfect pairing to any glass of red wine,

Wine Wipes are manufactured by Borracha LLC, located in San Luis Obispo County, California. Borracha creates innovative products for social drinkers while using a portion of the proceeds to support water projects in the developing world.
