Alright, I don't have any pictures yet but I purchased some neat little plants on Friday. I'm on a tight budget with college tuition coming up and homeschool curriculum to buy, but our local nursery had all their fruit trees half off, and I have poor self control. I've never planted anything edible before but our neighbor has figs, limes, and lemons, and I always envied their backyard fresh produce supplies.

The first two are Pineapple-Guava plants that flower in the Spring, and give out shell shaped edible fruit. Then I bought two apple trees specifically engineered for hot climate zones. We also have a one year old Vitex Tree that's blooming and growing rapidly too. They say that ancient Grecians used to grind the seeds on it to make homemade PMS remedies, and the tradition continues today. Papi thinks we should plant a whole yard of Vitex trees to offset PMS symptoms. Funny.

I don't know what a Teasel is. Are the spines sharp? Does it bloom constantly? Intriguing picture though, jams!

I'd like to see some pictures of your English variety blueberry bushes. I read a Gardening Manual about planting Texas blueberries and it was all blah blah about acidity levels and PH needed for berries to prosper. I noticed though that we have wild blueberries that grow without any care. Sometimes, I think that gardening book writers are in the pocket of the Gardening Industry and get kickbacks for constantly suggesting more items for people to needlessly drop their money on.

Conspiracies everywhere!

Oh, and my favorite find is the long coveted Australian Bottlebrush Tree that I've been pining over.

Wow elasticwaistbandlady you got a brlliant haul of plants there. hmm Guava, hmmmmm Apples.... drools like Homer S. I was unaware of the Vitex mtself? PMS you say? I think a nice big grove for the not wife is in order.. if they can grow and seed in the UK that is!

We had a fig for a while but I didnt protect it properly a couple of winters ago and it died.

Seriously you really did get a great haul. I am envious!!!

Thanks Fraser, I do appreciate your comments on my work.

Elasticwaistbandlady the Teasel is a common wildflower in the UK I love it because of its odd look but the flowers do not last long and it dies off - it is an annual- but it seeds like crazy. As a result we are never short of them!

I do like the Bottlebrush Tree.. probably a bit too tender for our gardens.. on the other hand you never know and knowing the not-wife's willingness to play teh long game it could be among her seed purchases soon!!

So what about some pictures of your blueberries, jams? Why does that sound vaguely dirty to me?

My backyard is a giant mud pit, thanks to our 100 pound Labrador beast. I'd like to plant some edible things back there too, but I'm not all that studied on cross pollination. Do you always have to plant two of everything to produce fruit?

I'll take a pic soon, but not tonight as it is chucking it down outside!

Labradors are great eh? but I can imagine what they do. As for pollination I think it depends on the type. Some are self pollenating but I am not sure which ones
