Better to remain silent and be thought a fool...
...than to speak out and remove all doubt. David Starkey should have borne this quote in mind before spewing shite on Newsnight
I saw that Newsnight debate, and enjoyed it immensely. So much so that I've downloaded the Flash video, and archived it on my hard drive for future delectation. It was a complete car crash for Starkey, and very well-deserved too.
I've been avoiding Newsnight because it's not good for my blood pressure, but I watched this the next morning and could hardly believe Starkey's ignorance. Seemed a bit cynical of the Beeb to have someone like that 'analysing' such momentous events.
By the way, I think the "career-ending" comment came from Owen Jones, the author of Chavs who was also on the show.

It was painful to watch as I was waiting for the lady beside him to punch him out.
I haven't heard anything that blatant since George Wallace was the governor of Alabama and desegregation was ordered by the Federal courts.
I understand the Guardian described it as a career-ending interview.

It was indeed Owen who said that Stan,
Starkey was a disgrace but he has a track record of being a rude opinionated wanker so I think you are right to think it was a cynical move
