The title of this blog comes from a Gaelic expression -"putting on the poor mouth"-which means to exaggerate the direness of one's situation in order to gain time or favour from creditors.
eerie.... not a cheerful picture for me. And the gloom and doom of recession isn't helping everybody.....
That's actually kinda creepy. But in a strangely beautiful way.
Impressive! Is there a story behind this statue, Jams?
Ach, I felt like that this morning.
Thanks everyone. It is a statue on a tomb at Pere Lachaise in Paris Sean. Just as well I didn't see you James!!
Beautiful shot! I am a big fan of cemetery art, however thanks to Dr Who whenever I see statues such as these I think to myself "don't blink" :)
Wow, looks like a vintage photo.
Very appropriate for a tomb, captures the gloom perfectly.Best wishes
With his hands out and thumbs facing down it looks like he's holding back a torrent from the other side of the wall.
A bit nightmarish...It looks to me like he just got out of the tomb. Probably was buried alive like Balzac's Colonel Chabert.
That's very interesting. I can't decide if it's greeting with open arms or protecting what's behind it and holding back.
I am glad you took a black and white version of the picture... gives it a much deeper meaning.... nice one!
The image is spooky & bizarre and it sends chills down my spine. Happy WW!
Very forbidding and haunting. I like the vibe.
Great shot. It looks very spooky..Happy WW:)
I'll like to think it's opening arms to welcome. But a matter of harsh environment elements caused it's current state.Happy WW Jams! :)
Creepy guy!Trying to scare me, eh!:)
That rocks man!
It is dark.
This is great. I love it. so very dramatic. happy WW!
I know it's supposed to be WW but what's the story behind this? I'm curious. It's very interesting and creepy too.
Very Striking - He knows how to elicit emotion. Makes you want to know more…Happy WW
some haunting ? I wonder how this looks like at night.
strange and creepy. it looks as if the hands were chained.
There must be an interesting story behind the image. What could it be?
It's spooky but it's a good find. :D
strange photo, gives me the creeps.happy ww.
That is haunting yet inviting. I want to see her face!
that's spooky! i hope never to see a figure like this on my way home on a dark night :)...
Wow! Very creepy. I don't think I'd want to be there at night.
Goodness, that dark face is awfully reaper-like.*shudder*Probably not the look the sculptor was going for.
Now that I know it's a tomb, it makes sense why it's so gloomy!
Glad it's sunny outside right now...:)
That is seriously creepy... that makes me think of Lepers in Biblical times. Looks like the face is missing bits. Happy WW! :)
So stark, and thought provoking.
Have you also the one on Jim Morrison's grave ?
I love statuary. It is always interesting to see what the artist decides to portray, and this is very powerful. I think the use of B&W heightens the sense of drama.Mine's up at:http://beingchronicallyillisapill.blogspot.com/2009/02/wordless-wednesday-baby-its-cold.htmlHappy WW!
Ooo...I love it. Looks rather Jedi-like, too.
So many interesting interpretations. It certainly isn't cheerful, but very interesting. Very gray. Full of symbolism, religious and otherwise. And I do see the Jedi thing as well ;)
I need to go ck to Paris soon. Apparently there is a 'bead district' there!
That is very life like!!!
obscure, but eminet as WW entry
A skeletal face, it seems... I've been posting my photos from cemeteries around NYC... did I tell you that already, jams?
I'll be ocer to take a look Mary
It looks quite scary but also captivating.
