Quark, strangeness and charm - Hawkwind (my avatar in action)

I know I have posted this video before but it was taken off youtube (and probably will be again. This, sadly, is the only piece of footage available on the internet of Robert Calvert (my avatar) in action.

What is U-Tube's problem?

Me thinketh that the megaphone was used to cover his teeth! Whoa!

Personally, I only truly love songs with QUARK references in them, and this is no exception.

I think it was the band that asked it be taken down, Ren.

This should have been a hit ewbl. It was released as a single in 1977. A slower live version was also released in the 90s. Shame the people of britain didnt buy it in their droves

Now there's a horse of a different colour, but I have to say I like the flavour...

My friend, you have good taste in music. Everything you post appeals to me.

I can think of two reasons the band may have asked to have it taken down. One, at least over here, one must assiduously defend one's copyright; otherwise, one can literally lose it, as the work enters the public domain because the copyright is not asserted. Two, perhaps the band didn't like the marginal quality of the videos online... many musicians (not including me) are obsessive about such things.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. Hawkiwnd are hardl in the megastar bracket and a lot of their income comes from recordings of live concerts. Although a fan such as me would certainly buy a copy of the DVD this appeared on.

Some artists are quite happy with the non profit trading of fan recordings of live concert (eg Robyn Hitchcock). which pleases me as more of his work is available!

You know, you've made me aware of artists I was unfamiliar with like SPARKS, and now I periodically hear their music on XM radio, but I still have never heard any Hawkwind. Not even on the classic rock station. Did they have any success outside Europe?

They grazed the bottom of your album charts a few times in the 70s but that was it, ewbl. They are very much a cult band in the US

Ooooh, The Cult, now you're speaking my musical language!

I used to have a secret crush on Ian Astbury, and I would have plastered his posters all over my room if my Mom had allowed that sort of decorating scheme. Sadly, it was muted colors, and horsey wallpaper until my escape at 18.

Give me songs like Rain and Sanvtuary but albums like Spiritswalker were dire!
give me old stuff from when they were the Southern Death Cult!!!

Stumbled into this by accident while searching for some Hawkwind desktop wallpaper on Google. It was a treat to see it, as I have been a huge fan of the band for getting on for 20 years but have never seen Bob Calvert in action. Thanks for linking to that.

I'll be at the Astoria on December 20th for Hawkwind's gig there.

Glad you liked it arbiter. I was lucky to see Calvert a few times as a solo act in the year or so before he died. Still it is good that Quark is available (but not for long I daresy) I would imagine it will be taken down sometime soon.

I will be at the Astoria gif too, From the review on the yahoo hawkwind group it sounds like we are in for a real treat. I am drooling at the prospect of Images and Infinity being back on the set!
