I am so pleased and encouraged to see this issue addressed on so many blogs. Kudos!

China is in ultimate control here, and they are obsessed with their image for the upcoming Olympics. If the voices are loud enough it may make some difference - at least in the response of the Western governments?

Thanks LB. Thanks Lady Macleod welcome to the Poor Mouth. China is definitely the key to change in Burma but the response of western governments is very important too

Hitchens in the Monday Slate.com magazine notes that the junta also promotes Buddhism, by building temples. The protests were larger than monks.

Ot: Sonia strongly defended my blog against any anti-Semitic charge. The reason for the guilt by association and unsubstanciated charges, are because of the political bankruptcy of my opponent.

Being accused of having a blog that reads like the Protocols, is a serious charge.

The main lesson I learned from the experience of Trotsky, is never underestimate your enemies. No matter how mentally ill or stupid they appear to be. He underestimated Stalin.

The monls swere the focus of the protests so it seems but there were thousands of Burmese citizens too. THey are not forgotten.

We should not forget the brave people who took huge risks to get images of the regime's brutality.

I know Sonia disagrees on the guilt by association issue. As I made clear I loathe LWB and his shitty blog and he would not be made welcome here (not that it is likely he will coment)- but my blog, my rules and thy blog, thy rules.

A blog that is more of a forum will attract its share of twats. i Wouldn't be happy to be called an anti semite on that basis.

FREE Burma!!!

Bush slammed the UN and the rulers of Myanmar in his UN speech last week.

The UN must do something, but they never use military force to fight.
That is a huge problem.

Illegal drug fortunes are a BIG part of this.

absurd thought -
God of the Universe wants
complete narco states

criminals in power
loving the corrupt drug war

absurd thought -
God of the Universe says
shoot peaceful protesters

calling for democracy
which you must never allow

absurd thought -
God of the Universe thinks
keep trying communism

you can never KILL too much
pursuing Utopia...

Burma is a country that places Jim Crow authoritarian rule on several genuine indigenous people. The actions of the Monks are brave but as noted the country supresses mostly Christian minorities.

Ask yourself why most of us know zero about Burmas minorities who have their own languages and clear historical identities dating back thousands of years? Do these indigenous minorities have to slam planes into office buildings or shoot school kids in the back to get brand awareness. There are plenty of genuinely oppressed people who do not resort to pointless violence aimed at civilians.

I did not seek to bring this conflict here. However, as Ren mentioned it I will state my side.

The issue is blog owner culpability
for the comments and commenters on his site. The level of anti-semitic comments left on Ren's sit is apparent on even a most basic level of scrutiny. Ren might have a defense if he pointed out his own positions were in disagreement
with the specific vile comments. Ren has never once stated his disagreement with any of the comments that have taken place over a long period of time.

Ren has defended the planets most notorious anti-semite Norman Finkelstein. His claim that the defence was on civil liberterian grounds is absurd on any basic reading. Moreover, his claims of ignorance about Finkelsteins frequent use of Israel/Nazi comparisons, calling Elie Weisel a professional Jew and comparing Jewish leaders to caricatures from Der Sturmer are also not credible.

I will also point to his posting of the political beliefs of pornstar Nina Hartley. Hartley represents herself as a Jew, but no Zionist. What was the real point of that post?

Moreover, merely wanting to create a state for Palestinians is not anti-semitic. Neither Beatroot nor yourself has been called anti-semitic. I respectfully disagree with your opinion but in the real world adults do so.

Beakerkin to be honest I don't know much about Finkelstein or Hartley, For that matter, having studied Psycholinguistics - and thus Chomsky - at university I have no wish to read anything else he has written.

Ren's blog acts in many ways like a forum. I don't subscribe to his political views, or some of the posts and I don't care for some of the commenters, LWB being a case in point. But it is a forum which also attracts rightists such as Sonia, Craig Bardo, Beamish, Roman, Farmer John and Nanc.

I've seen other blogs which are far tighter on moderation to the point of being almost stalinist. It's the blogger's blog, so it's their rules . I won't go over old ground and refer back to a lengthy post here from about this time last year concerning one blog owner. THe blog in question is probably the worst for that sort of thing.

I digress. Both of you remain perfectly welcome here
