If proof was needed that Jeremy Clarkson is an idiot ......

WW Follows

Jeremy Clarkson ate a large dose of humble pie after a ham-fisted attempt to rubbish the furore over the loss of the entire database of child benefit claimants in October (25 million people's personal details on two computer discs was lost in transit between two Government departments) . Wanting to prove that the story was a fuss about nothing, he published details of his Barclays account in the Sun newspaper, including his account number and sort code. He even told people how to find out his address. "All you'll be able to do with them is put money into my account. Not take it out. Honestly, I've never known such a palaver about nothing," he told readers.

But Clarkson admitted he was "wrong" after he discovered a reader had used the details to create a £500 direct debit to the charity Diabetes UK. "I opened my bank statement this morning to find out that someone has set up a direct debit which automatically takes £500 from my account," he said. "I was wrong and I have been punished for my mistake. Contrary to what I said at the time, we must go after the idiots who lost the discs and stick cocktail sticks in their eyes until they beg for mercy."

I’ve always thought Jeremy Clarkson was an arrogant jerk. I’m glad to see that his arrogance got a dent. It’s a shame that it wasn’t a £5,000 donation and to, say, an environmental charity or to the Vegan Society.. Now that would have been a delicious irony

Can't stand him.

I can just hear Nelson Muntz say those words!

There was a keen sense of humour at work there, but it would have been even funnier if it was a donation to the Caravan Club or Living Streets.

Granted that Greenpeace or Friends of the Earth would have been funny too.

A donation to the Hilary Clinton campaign would have knocked his ego into next week :p

He's too tall and arrogant for his own good.

I just can't understand why he had to do that. Wasn't that so foolish of him?
Mine is up too.

Surely you would think he knew better?

Agreed he really should not have been such an ass. I really wish his comeuppance had been more ironic!

Clarkson earns a living by making arrogant statements to provoke reactions from others. As the late Peter Cook might have said, he is a "provocative f*cker".

Like Madonna, Clarkson suffers from the "Love me, hate me but don't ignore me" syndrome... but, thankfully, we are spared the sight of him prancing round in a leotard.

It's worth noting that Clarkson is worshipped as a deity by many 14 year old boys.

He's a silly tit. Nuff said.

Couldn't have happened to a better person. He's just an arrogant bore!

...but not so arrogant he can't freely admit he was wrong when he was wrong.

That is considerably more than your average politician - and he didn't loose the data after all.

I loved this story and you're right - a green charity would have been perfect!

Granted he did say he was wong but he could hardly spin it any other way. If you put your personal details in a newspaper it is going to be a gift for any id thief. He should be grateful it was an affordable amount (for him) and to charity

Great story. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Top Gear is very popular here in Australia and they are launching a local version this year.

Personally I find it bloody annoying Colin. I've seen James May and Richard Hammond presenting other things and they are okay. Actually I did once see Cklarkson do something very good once - a story about how his father in law got the VC at Arnhem. For once he was watchable

What can you expect from a guy who earns a living advertising cars that will do 200 MPH on the public highway

When he's not screaming abuse at children for taking his picture, he's a crass, smug, pseudo-Libertarian Mr Toad. As long as he shouts the loudest he thinks he's in the right. Would he have admitted his error if it didn't give him material for another column? Tedious.
