The Final Phone-tier

British climber, Rod Bader , is making the final preparations in his attempt to make a mobile phone call from the summit of Mount Everest.

Following weeks of acclimatisation, Mr Baber is now at base camp recuperating and checking equipment prior to beginning the actual ascent. He expects to make the call from the north ridge on 23 May.

Apparently the call is possible following the installation in China of a Making a mobile call from the top of Everest has become possible as a base station that has line-of-sight to the north ridge of the mountain.

It’s all very worthy I suppose. But to be honest it’s hardly a boys own adventure that ranks alongside the likes of Burton and Speke. On the other hand it may just be the Ripping Yarn of our time – Across the Andes with Wi-Fi next?
