The title of this blog comes from a Gaelic expression -"putting on the poor mouth"-which means to exaggerate the direness of one's situation in order to gain time or favour from creditors.

The Ballad of Ira Hayes
as arranged by Kinky Friedman. I prefer this to the Johnny Cash version

There just aren't many balladeers anymore! That's very similar to my Dad's style. In fact, I could almost hear my Dad playing and singing this song!
Kinky ran for governor of Texas as an independent. For an independent to get on the ballot, you need 90,000 signatures from people who swear they won't vote foe Democrats or Republicans. He got on the ballot. Ralph Nader for president did as well. In Minnesota you need only 2,000 signatures.
Ren I like Kinky as a singer and writer. It would have amused me to see him as Texan governor. The Cash version is fine but I prefer the Kinky version. the chorus is more melancholy
