Some people have real class and some just don't

Janice L Daniels is the mayor of Troy, Michigan. Back in June she added the following comment comment on her Facebook page:

I think I'm going to throw away my I love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married  there"

Personally I would have wished to shove that I Love New York bag up the bigot's arse but that would ahve achieved nothing.

Here is a response from a lesbian mother at an open meeting of the Troy city council

This woman has true class. She has shown more grace and diginity in one short speech than I could muster in a lifetime. Bravo!

Jake you are absolutely right. There is not a parent on this planet who should not be proud of a son like Zach

I love New York but I wouldn't buy a carry bag with that message emblazoned on it

I have a long time friend, who has been with a partner for many years. He is French Canadian (as I am), and the age of my British sons. He has been the most supportive person, in all my moves and tribulations. And I depend on him totally to help and sustain my sons when I go. I have adopted him in my heart, and I introduce him, with pride, to everybody, as my French son. It has been an honour and a joy to have met and known him. We never mention sexuality, his or mine. It's part of us, as the colour of our skin, the language we speak, and the choices we make. we need not to apologize and defend the persons we are, or explain the differences.

She is one classy lady.

Anyone who does not understand people and their differences and makes crass blanket comments about something they do not understand (or do not like) is quite frankly limited. It also makes me wonder how those people get into positions of authority...

Beautifully said. I do hope the Mayor responded, at a minimum, respectfully. The politics of deliberate divisiveness is rampant in America today. We need a whole lot less of it. This mom made a good beginning.

me neither Nursie!

Ach it is irrelevant in the scheme of things Claude. Being gay, straight, in the closet or out and proud is an irrelevant detail

With views like that Cherie I wouldn't have her run a bath than run a city.

Form what I gather she is unrepentant,, except about using the word queer. Perhaps the message will seep through over time and she will be another leopard who will change her shorts

There seems to be a race to the bottom by far too many members of the right wing political class in the US. Thank goodness for this brave woman.

It looks that way. I know we have our own fuckwits here Susa but a politician saying that would almost certainly be out on his or her arse if they said or wrote what she did

Why waste a perfectly good I Love New York bag? I don't have one, for instance.

And yes, the response was excellent. Not my style, though ;-)

Not my style either but I think it was more dignified!
